A major monographic exhibition dedicated to Denis Santachiara, a leading figure at the forefront of Italian and international design, originally from Campagnola Emilia (Reggio Emilia). The exhibition will offer an organic and comprehensive overview of more than sixty years of non-stop visionary creativity through a selection of projects, artworks, installations, products and prototypes.
Santachiara forged a lasting and unique career, moving with ease between different sectors and incorporating technological innovation to support his distinct poetic and ironic sensibility. His professional career began in mechanical workshops and early experiences with car design in Emilia’s Motor Valley. He then widened his vision to embrace contemporary art, including interior design for art hotels, theatre and film sets, and even advanced research into robotics, objects that come to life and transform – this culminated in the creation of Cyrcus, an ecosystem focused on designer-led work linked to digital manufacturing technologies.
The exhibition does not aim to be a series of celebrations, but a monographic show that invites visitors into the heart of the creative process, into the designer’s thought process and approach to design. Every room is dedicated to a fundamental concept in design research, creating an exhibition that develops dynamically.
Each exhibition gallery sees a concept take shape through products, projects, prototypes, studies and research materials, clearly reflecting the rigorous journey from initial intuition to the creation of the object. The works on display are not presented as isolated episodes, but as a coherent expression of a working process, theoretical reflection and constant experimentation in the field.
The exhibition also explores the constant and productive dialogue between design, architecture and art. This multidisciplinary interweaving is the result of a precise theoretical conviction – design is not merely a discipline linked to home furnishings, but represents a cultural tool capable of interpreting and improving people’s daily lives. This perspective brings about wide-ranging research that spans diverse fields, transcending the traditional boundaries of furniture design to engage directly with various sectors of contemporary design.
The main exhibition thread is complemented by a special section, also inside the palazzo, dedicated to new generations of design. This area creates a dialogue between various works by Santachiara and designers chosen by him, bearing witness to the continuity of an open comparison between established visions and the new languages of the future.
Coinciding with the exhibition, the book published by Corraini and edited by Chiara Alessi traces the development of the designer’s ideas.
Denis Santachiara was born in Campagnola Emilia (RE). Self-taught, he joined the De Tomaso Group as a car stylist at a very young age; he later collaborated with Maserati and other coachbuilders specializing in “dream cars” in Modena.
Starting in 1978, he was among the first to create works that straddled the line between art and design; these were exhibited at various events, including the Venice Biennale (1980), Documenta 8 (Kassel, 1988), and the Milan Triennale (in 1982, 1984, 1986, 1996, 2001, and 2004) .
Always interested in the interaction between technology and poetic design, in 1984 he presented *La Neomerce – The Design of Invention and Artificial Ecstasy* (Milan Triennale and Centre Pompidou, Paris), a landmark exhibition and international reference point for a new form of performative, techno-poetic, and ironic design.
He also began collaborating with major Italian and international design brands and received numerous awards and recognitions, including two Compasso d’Oro awards, two Good Design Awards, a Design World award, and a Digital Design Award (for cyrcus.it, the platform he founded that produces designs using digital fabrication). In 2018, he won the Marmomac Icon Award.
Since 2005, he has been involved in digital design and manufacturing, through projects, conferences, and exhibitions.
He has taught at various institutions and universities, including the Royal College of Art in London, Cambridge University in Boston, NABA—Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, the Politecnico di Milano, and IULM in Milan.
In June 2022, he received an honorary degree from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan.
His works are held in several museums, including the MoMA in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, and the Triennale of Milan.
